Selfies and self esteem

Sometimes you just have to go outside and play in the gorgeous light with your camera...

It's a shame to me that in this day and age most people seem to feel "ashamed" of posting things like selfies or doing slightly narcissistic things like having photo shoots or doing their makeup just for fun. It's like we're supposed to apologize for wanting to feel pretty.

Personally, I like being told when I look nice. I don't know about you, but for me it takes a little bit of effort to look put together and it's really nice when someone takes the time to compliment and recognize it. I think it's downright silly that we are shaming young women for being "attention whores" when they post a selfies of themselves. We're allowed to want to be complimented, dang it! I think it can do wonders for a young lady's (or gent's) self esteem to compliment them rather than put them down for being "conceited."

I'm not saying I condone provocative photographs shared on social media - but that's opening a whole other bag of taters that I just don't want to get in to right now. So what are your opinions on selfies - conceited or not?

  2. I think selfies are a great way to build self esteem, especially when people compliment you on them. Though I don't post too many, I do take quite a good bit of them, you know, just to make sure I don't have anything wrong with my face.

  7. If all a person posts is selfies, its not healthy. If someone wants to dress up, feel pretty, or knows she looks good that day I think it's a great mood/confidence booster!

  8. I am all for getting all dressed up and staging happy little photoshoots. I don't see any problem with wanting to look pretty or capture it in a photo. I think vanity is okay but I don't believe in being shallow or superficial, and I truly believe there is a distinct difference!

  10. Amen, amen, amen. After taking selfies for months, I realize that there were things about myself that I truly loved, cherished. Truly. And had I not snapped those shots, I would have missed that goodness. So, selfie away.

And I'll have you know, I HEART your new hair. HEART.

  11. i think everyone takes selfies, even the people who criticize it. they just are too embarrassed to put it out for public consumption. i think there is a limit to how many a person should take or post, like you know throw some cat pics in that instagram feed, every once in awhile, but no shame in playing around and having fun!

  12. If I could take a decent selfie, I would post them for sure! The only thing that makes me wary of them is that I think a lot of younger teens (especially girls) post them because they need the validation, and I think that becomes a dangerous habit! That being said, I love looking at people's photos of themselves :-)

  13. I told someone the other day that I tell G all the time that he has a beautiful wife and he always does a goofy smile and agrees. It makes me feel so good to say it out loud and I know it makes him feel good to hear my confidence (especially since he benefits from it)

  14. I think selfies can be a very good thing! I think so many people feel more confident because of selfies in some respects because we are more willing to tell each other good things and compliments. Yes, there will always be that vapid line, but most people are far from it.

  15. I could not agree more! I think there's no point in making people feel embarrassed of wanting to remember a look or moment with a picture, and I honestly don't even think there needs to be any justification anyways. I love a good selfie!

  16. I like selfies too! I think my concern with younger gals (and guys) posting them so frequently is the amount of reassurance and attention they seem to need that they're not getting from other sources or activities. I know a few middle school girls (cousins) and if they don't get at least 100 likes on an Instagram photo, they consider that picture a failure and delete it. That's a lot of pressure on social networking to feel gratified and accepted. So I say, selfie away! I enjoy them from time to time, too. Particularly when I'm feeling super happy / cute / adventurous. I just want to be sure little ladies and gents are also seeking other avenues of worth and purpose. :)
