According to the Huffington Post, the majority of engagements last anywhere from 13-18 months. Ours was less than three months. Three months and 8 days to be exact. Or 10 weeks if you're in to that. Either way, it was WAY less than your average engagement.
Some people called me brave, but most called me crazy.
Some people called me brave, but most called me crazy.
Let me start from the beginning: I knew before I was engaged that I would be getting married before the end of the year. Getting engaged was not a surprise to me (though I was surprised at when/how he did it). Does that make sense? Derek and I talked often about getting engaged and getting married - we had even been ring shopping several times together - and I knew before I was engaged that I wouldn't stay that way for long before I was married. I would say knowing beforehand that it was going to be "short and sweet" helped with any anxiety/stress/bridezilla issues I would have had.
So... how did I do it - how did I plan a nice (in my opinion) wedding in 70 days without driving myself (or anyone else) crazy? Simple. I had one rule: be flexible. I think being flexible and having an open mind were the number one things in planning my wedding - and they should be the number one rules for planning any wedding, no matter the length of the engagement.
After telling myself I would be flexible I got down to the nitty gritty: budget, venue, food, flowers, and photography. How much was I willing to spend/sacrifice on each? Where did I want to spend the most money? When did I want to get married? Were my dates firm or flexible? These were the first questions I asked myself and once I had those answers, I started the real planning.

These were the first questions I asked myself and once I had those answers, I started the real planning.
After setting a "tentative" budget, the first thing I did was research venues. Since I "knew" I would be getting engaged (at some point) I had already done a little bit of online research - looking at websites, at former wedding pictures, and getting an idea of the cost of each venue. Questions I asked were: how long was the venue available to me (or did I have to pay extra to have the rehearsal on Friday night)? Did the price include tables, chairs, linens? Would I be required to use a "preferred vendor" list? Did it include or require event insurance? This really helped narrow down our potential venues.
The week after my engagement I started making phone calls to the few I had narrowed down. I had three dates I was willing to use: October 18, October 25, or November 1. I was really leaning toward the 25th. My most FAVORITE venue was not available that day. Or the other two. So I called a few more and my wedding date ended up being 10/18 (which just so happened to be Auburn's by-week, which was great). The venue we chose actually ended up being more beautiful than I could have imagined. And think! I might not have been married there if I wouldn't have been FLEXIBLE on my dates/choice of venue.
After setting the date and booking the venue - it was all downhill from there. Tune in next week for part two and (hopefully) a detailed timeline of my wedding planning process.

I was so opposite hahaha I had a fairly good idea of what I wanted for our wedding so I was willing to have a longer engagement so I wouldn't have to be as flexible. BUT I knew we were getting engaged too so I also started planning a few things ahead of time hahaha. You are seriously a rock star, I never could have done this, I am far too Type A
We definitely want a bigger wedding, so unfortunately it takes a year to reserve a wedding hall. I can't believe you got all this done in 3 months- you are a rockstar! :)
You're right, flexibility is key to a short engagement. Ours lasted about 9 months, and if I hadn't of been in my last semester of law school and studying for the bar exam, I probably would have pushed for an even shorter engagement. I can't wait to see more wedding posts from you!

You wanna know something? If anyone was a cool, calm, collected and flexible bride? My vote would have been you, hands down. You are so good at being flexible and easy going. NOW SHOW ME THE PHOTOS.
This is great! I would really love a short, short, short (less than 6 months) engagement one day just so I don't get caught up in things. Woot woot on you being flexible.

I definitely think it's something that can be done!! you are fast and know what you want!
i hate planning things so this is exactly how i would like to do things: keep it simple, keep it short, keep it anxiety free! super admire what you two did
your amazing for planning your wedding so fast! We have a year engagement, and I am so thankful for that year! Your amazing!!
Kudos to you for your flexibility and organization! What was your first choice?
I love that a plus for you was that it was Auburn's "by week." My dad has told me that if I get married in the fall I have to make sure to do it on a day when his alma mater isn't playing at home, or he won't be at my wedding. I'm 87% sure he's serious. I WANT MORE PICTURES, dammit. The end.
I am amazed you were able to get everything together that quickly. In the end the budget is really what is making my engagement be 11 months, but you seriously are a superhero or something haha
Wow! You must be really busy. I love the idea of a short engagement, I think it would keep the wedding from getting to over the top. You will have one clear image of what you what and you get it or something close. If you don't get to involved or upset about the tiny details then you focus on the purpose of the day more.
Great post, I'll keep the idea for the day I say yes to getting married (whenever that will be!)
I knew you would get it done, but I knew I couldn't have done it. I knew exactly what I wanted (and thankfully Jeremy wanted the same things) so there wasn't a lot of wiggle room. We also had some personal family drama going on (parents divorcing and it was getting ugly) so we waited for them as well.
But I am so happy that you got married on the day you wanted and everything was beautiful! So gorgeous!
I love this post. I can't wait to reads the rest. Like you my boyfriend and I have been talking about getting engaged for a while now and we are planning on getting married next fall. So even though we are not engaged yet I have done quite a bit of research and while my engagement won't *hopefully* be as short as yours it will be be on the shorter side.
Hi Kalyn,
So I stumbled upon this post via Pinterest, and searched your blog for other posts similar. My boyfriend and I are heavily considering having a Very short engagement, possibly shorter than even yours. But it seems daunting. Details are just whatever, it really all buffs out after the major things. But those major things (venue, dress, photographer) usually take time for booking in advance. How on earth would I get a dress purchased and fitted in time? And what photographer would even be free with one month's notice on the last month of the summer? It just seems a bit impossible at times. Do you have any advice on that? Thanks, girl!
