Why I Love My Tablet more than Books

If you've never noticed (I don't know why you would) I love to read. I used to could read a book in a whole day. Not just "a  book" but something like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Serously, I'd buy it in the morning and then stay up until the wee hours and finish it in a single day. Ah, to be twelve again.

My love for reading hasn't stopped, but I would say my available time and responsibilities have changed a little, therefore I can't finish a 700+ page book in a day anymore. As I've mentioned numerous times before on this blog, my goal this year is to read 30 books before 2016. I don't remember what number I'm at right now (somewhere around nine?) but I've got a few fun little challenges to help me stay on track (like this one, this one, and this one). You know what else helps me? Reading on my Samsung Nook tablet.

I know, I know, there's nothing that "beats the real thing" but is that really true? Yes sometimes having a real book with real pages in my hand is great, but here are a few reasons why my Nook (or any tablet/e-reader) is better:

Instant Gratification
Say there's a book I want, and I want it really bad. With my Nook tablet, the only thing I need to do is log on to my Barnes & Noble account, find the book, click "buy" and bam - there it is, ready to read.

Convenience
One of my favorite parts about my Nook tablet is that it's small. I got the seven inch version and it fits into all my purses, bags, and even a few pockets. I can take it almost anywhere. I say "almost" because I can't take it underwater. I've taken it in the bath but it still makes me a little nervous to do that too.

Multiple Devices
I would have to say that this is, hands down, the number one reason I prefer my Nook tablet over a "real" book. I have the nook app downloaded on my phone, Derek's phone, Derek's tablet, and there's also an online feature where you can log on from an internet browser. This is my favorite because if I find myself unexpectedly in a situation where I'd want to read (i.e. waiting in a doctor's office or a long car ride), but didn't bring my tablet with me, I can easily pull it up on my phone or a computer.

Screen Backlight
With a regular book, at night I've got to keep my bedside lamp on to read, which in turn keeps my husband up huffing and puffing which in turn disturbs my reading. With my Nook, I can put the screen on dim and it's still bright enough for me to read but not too bright to keep my sleeping beauty husband awake.

Settings
Want bigger text? Done. Want a black background with white words (supposedly better when looking at screens)? Done. Want bigger margins? Done. What I'm saying here is that you get to customize your reading experience to what YOU prefer, rather than being stuck with the "manufactures settings" like you are with a paperback.

Of course I can go on and list more things like how I never lose my page, or my hand doesn't get tired from holding open a thick book when there's only a few pages left (come on, you know that's aggravating) and the fact that I can read it one handed or look up words while I'm reading a book, but I'll just leave it at that.

So tell me, what do you prefer - a tablet/e-reader or the real thing?

I agree wholeheartedly with this post!!! I like Kindle for the same reasons you love Nook. I haven't bought a physical book in years. lol

I also love how easy it is to get books on my ipad nook app. Every now and then, if I am gifted a book or loaned one, I appreciate the tangible book itself but otherwise I agree with you on all of these points!

Yes to all of these! It makes reading so much quicker and I love that you can get a lot of classics for free.

I think I'm still a book lover, although you wouldn't know it from this year...I'm doing a book challenge for 2015 to read 52 books. I'm at 48 right now, which is ridiculous. And I've read most of them on my phone. If you haven't heard of Overdrive yet, I highly recommend it. I believe it should work with your nook, I know it does with kindle. Basically you sign into your library and get free ebooks and audiobooks-on a temporary loan, of course. It's so nice to have audiobooks on my phone, that's probably at least a third of my completed books,

I thought I would never be a convert, but now i'm completely hooked. I read so much more. My only issue is that sometimes i just buy and buy and buy because i want all the books. And i don't have time for all the books. :(

Not for me! Nothing beats a real book in my opinion!

I love having the Kindle and Nook app on my ipad. I can take book anywhere with me. I love it. I am starting to get a large collection though. What books are you reading now?

I read both ways, I love being able to read on my phone or iPad at night because then I don't have to get up out of bed to go turn off my light :)

I will never let go of my love of a "real" book. But I read so much and such a variety, that I cannot physically pack or carry everything I would read on a day or vacation with downtime. So, my Kindle paperweight for the win on that one!

I'm very guilty of being a binge book reader...especially on the weekends! I think the last series I did that with was Outlander (8 mega books in 4 months). Haha. I'm a huge fan of the convenience of my Kindle, especially the iPhone app, cause now I can read anywhere without the weight of multiple books! There are times though when I really crave a real book.

Okay you're really convincing but I need to actual books so that I can one day in my huge mansion have a library

I'm the total opposite haha! I wish I liked the tablets more, but I really enjoy the feeling of a paper book. Call me old-fashioned!

I have the Nook color and I love it. Can we be friends since you have a Nook too? I'd love to share/lend you books if it's possible. I love both and I go through phases. Right now, I am all about an actual book. But I have noticed that I read faster on my Nook. I don't know why that is, but it's true. I love mine and it's going to be 5 years old this Christmas! I can't believe that!

I use the Kindle app on my ipad. I've been enjoying "real" books lately because I went back to the library, but it has it's limits (due dates/availability). When I want to buy a book I would much rather by the e version because it's cheaper AND it doesn't take up physical space in my house. With the e version you don't have to worry about toting an extra book in your carry on just in case you finish the one you are have already started.

Ok, I have literally JUST been thinking about this. I've never been interested in e-readers... But I also struggled in college when professors would have our entire readers online because I just don't do on screen reading as well. I've also heard that the physical interaction with a book is important in the internalization of the process.

Yep, I'm just, some sort of very large feelings on this business.

While I love just about every tech thing, I've never been able to get on board with e-readers. There's just something about holding a book in your hand and turning actual pages! On the flip side, toting hardcover books around is the WORST! I might have to give e-books a try again one of these days, you do make some good points about them!

Yay, thanks for linking to my challenge! :) Also, I prefer the "real thing" (a.k.a. print books) because they are more Instagrammable and I like to flip through my books a lot haha. BUT, I LOVE my Kindle for traveling because of the things you mentioned above - convenience, instant gratification, etc. I'm definitely not an ebook-hater or print-snob, I just prefer the feel of a paper book in my hands. :)

My husband and I also used to have the issue of my lamp at night, so I got a little reading light book clip from Amazon. It works wonders. :)
